Whether to Hang or Fold Clothes for the Best Custom Closet System Organization

Should you hang your clothes or fold them? What’s going to result in the most organized custom closet system possible? The answer isn’t as simple as one or the other – there are different considerations to take into account for different kinds of clothes.

Understanding how best to achieve custom closet system organization requires understanding what different kinds of clothes need when you store them.

  • Items to Hang
  • Items to Fold
  • Items to Roll
  • Flexible Clothing Items

Learn how to decide if you should be hanging, folding, or doing something else when it comes to your clothes.

Items to Hang

Several different types of clothing need to be hung. These are the things that you should prioritize if you have limited hanging space. Formal wear should always be hung. Most dresses require hanging, with a few possible exceptions, such as sweater dresses that are bulky, won’t wrinkle, and may be pulled out of shape on a hanger. Tailored items and any type of clothing that might wrinkle should be hung to help you avoid wrinkling and having to iron the item before you can wear it. Outerwear, like coats, jackets, ponchos, and capes should be hung. Most bathrobes should also hang.

When hanging clothes, it’s important to choose the right hanger for the job. According to Real Simple, the worst thing you can do is keep your clothes on wire hangers, such as the type that come free from dry-cleaning services. Instead, you should look for hangers that will help keep your clothes in the right shape, prevent slippage, and support heavier items. Wooden hangers, while often more expensive, are almost always a good choice for a lot of different clothes. However, slimmer velvet-covered hangers are good for people who have more limited hanging space and can prevent things like silky blouses and spaghetti-strap dresses from sliding off the hanger and ending up on the floor. You may also want to look at using items like pants racks to save space and prevent wrinkling at the same time.

Items to Fold

Just as some items have to be hung, others should always be folded. Shorts aren’t really designed to fit correctly on hangers, so they should be folded neatly and put in a drawer. Athletic wear is somewhat delicate and can be stretched out of shape on a hanger, so that ought to be folded up as well.

Sweaters are an interesting case because hanging them is usually a bad idea. Bulky sweaters can be too much for your hangers, and the hangers can disrupt the shape of the sweater, so folding them is the right choice. However, they aren’t as easily put away in dressers as other types of clothes because of their bulk, and cramming them in or trying to fit more than a drawer should be able to hold is a bad idea as well. They can go in very deep drawers if you have them. If you don’t, you may want to consider stacking folded sweaters on shelves instead. That way, you can build a taller stack without having to crush and cram them into a dresser drawer.

Items to Roll

Hanging and folding aren’t the only two options for your clothes. Some articles of clothing can be most efficiently put away by rolling them up instead. You can usually store items like these in drawers or in baskets or bins that sit on shelves or the floor. They include socks, tights, pantyhose, underwear, leggings, and ties.

Some casual skirts can be rolled and put away, but those that are more prone to wrinkles should be hung instead. Rolling also works for a lot of sleepwear, particularly lightweight sleep shirts and shorts that you might wear in hot weather. Camisole tops and undershirts can also be rolled to save space and put away neatly as well.

Flexible Clothing Items

Now that you have your wardrobe mostly divided into items to hang, items to fold, and items to roll, a lot of what’s left should be items that are flexible, including T-shirts, jeans, and most other denim. What you should do at this point is look to see where you have the most space left. That’s probably where these items will go, as these are clothing pieces that tend to be more flexible and hold up well no matter where you decide to put them. If you have equal amounts of folding and hanging space remaining, just split them up between the two.

T-shirts are truly versatile, as they can be hung, rolled, or folded and stored in a drawer or on a shelf. They can go anywhere that you need them to. You can even fold t-shirts into rectangles and position them like files in a drawer so that you can see each folded edge. You’re unlikely to be able to roll denim, but jeans should be able to fold or hang, as can some other denim items.

Conclusion

There’s no one right way to store clothes. Instead, you have to decide what should be hung, folded, or rolled and what can be stored in several different ways.
